LAGOS – The Mile 12 Market Traders’ Association in Lagos called on shoppers to avoid indiscriminate parking of vehicles while carrying out their transactions.
The association’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Odusanya, gave the advice during an interview with newsmen.
Odusanya said that indiscriminate parking of vehicles, particularly, during the Yuletide, would cause traffic chaos on the expressway.
“We are against illegal and indiscriminate parking by the road side while shopping in the market. We appeal to shoppers to shun this act.
“Within the market, all the places that obstruct trailers and vehicles have been cleared. In fact, we just built a new garage to create space for vehicles to park so as to de-congest the road.
“We have car parks within the market that can accommodate more than 150 vehicles. The car parks are situated at ‘Shukurah yam’ and ‘perishables’ sections of the market.
“A shopper will only pay a token of N200 for using the parking space in the market,” he said.
The PRO said efforts had also been made to ensure that articulated vehicles that brought goods did not park inside the market.
“We have an expanse of land at Ibafo, Ogun State, where any trailer coming to the market with goods will first park. Every commodity has its own parking section there.
“After offloading the trucks with goods in the market and there’s space, the monitoring team will call the next batch of trailers to come from Ibafo,” said Odusanya.
He also added that the market had increased its traffic task force officials from 10 to 20, to ensure hitch-free vehicular and human traffic during the Yuletide.
