Enugu- Mr David Iloyanamon, the Head of Operations, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) South- East Zone, said that no fewer than 10 fraudsters were convicted in the zone in 2014.
Addressing newsmen in Enugu, Iloyanamon said that the achievement was an appreciable increase in the number of successful convictions recorded in the zone in 2013.
He said that financial crime was on the rise and advised members of the public to be wary of activities of fraudsters.
“The public need to shield themselves against activities of cyber fraudsters which are on the rise worldwide,” he said.
Iloyanamon said that cyber crime was a threat to the security of any nation, adding that the commission had set machinery in place to curb the menace.
“We have discovered that some of the cyber crimes can be avoided if the people are educated on it.
“You need to know that opening an unsolicited mail in your e-mail box can expose your secret information and make you susceptible,” he said.
Iloyanamon urged the public to volunteer credible and concrete information that would enable the commission deliver on its mandate.
“There is the need for the people to know that visiting the EFCC does not mean that you are condemned.
“We all have a duty to perform to make our society better. We need credible and concrete information that will serve the interest of the people,” Iloyanamon said.
In his presentation, the Head, Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said that one of the landmark achievements of the EFCC in 2014 was the successful conviction of one Vincent Ojionu.
Uwujaren said that the 60-year-old former employee of Lion Stock Brokers was convicted for illegally selling the share of a deceased client to the tune of N37.5 million.
“He was arrested, prosecuted and sentenced. The court asked him to make restitution that led to the recovery of part of the money,” Uwujaren said.
