ABUJA – An All Progressives Congress (APC) youth group, League of Patriotic and Progressive Youths, said Sen. George Akume was suitable to lead the Senate as its President in the 8th Assembly.
The Coordinator of the group, Mr Dominic Alancha, stated this at a news conference in Abuja aimed at canvassing support for Akume, a member of APC, re-elected senator for a third term.
According to Alancha, the official endorsement from the group was in recognition of the senator’s doggedness that resulted in Benue, his state, becoming a domain for APC state, wrestling it from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He explained that the group decided to support Akume to lead the 8th Assembly because he played a major role in entrenching the party in the North-Central region.
Alancha said: “we call on Akume to throw his hat into the ring by contesting for the elevated office of Senate President.
“The 8th National Assembly needs a leader whose pedigree is distinguished.
“Nigeria’s political revolution calls for men and women of great understanding, sagacity, insight and conviction to be at the driving seat at this particular time.
“This is no time to experiment with trial and error, but time to elevate men and women of conviction, industry, national acceptability and proven track record to stand guard at critical organs of government.’’
It would be recalled that the slot for the nation’s number three man had been a raging issue in the APC with some zones clamouring for the position.
Although the North-Central looks favoured, Sen. George Akume and Sen. Bukola Saraki have been named as likely candidates.
