BENIN CITY – The member representing Orhionmwon East Constituency II seat in Edo State House of Assembly and Chairman, House Committee on Transport, Hon. Nosa Okunbor and other stakeholders said the reprisal of many commercial vehicles drivers in the state’s to comply with the state colour code is a bad omen for the transport industry in the state.
The stakeholders are the Managing Director of Unity Motors Limited, Mr. Joseph Odiase and the state chairman of Butchers’ Union, Comrade Ikponmwosa Orhue
In an interviews with newsmen in Benin City, Hon. Okunbor said colour code serves as good and corporate identity for the state, besides helping to check the incidence of crime.
Beside, he said the introduction of security code numbers, to be inscribed on the body of commercial vehicles would also serve the purpose of personal identity, not only for drivers, but vehicle owners as well.
He commended the initiative of government for introducing the colour code and therefore urged the ministry of transport to enforce government policy on the matter.
Describing it as baseless, the notion by drivers that colour code was not being appreciated, Okunbor solicited the co-operation of relevant stakeholders in transportation business with government to adequately enforce the colour code.
Okunbor said his committee would liaise with the Ministry of Transport for the purpose of setting up a designated centre for security code registration.
Corroborating the position of Hon. Okunbor, Orhue added that it would also serve as source of revenue for government through sale of stickers to commercial vehicle drivers.
On his part, Odiase urged that the vehicles be restricted to intro-city commercial vehicles.
While expressing gratitude to the initiator of the project, they appealed to the commercial vehicle drivers to comply with government policy on colour code so as to avoid possible embarrassment.
