BENIN CITY-The military authorities have said that they have arrested the soldiers who went on rampage and invaded Edo State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Ezoti Street, manhandled officials of the Committee on War Against Indiscipline (WAI) for daring to arrest a couple alleged to have contravened traffic rules in Benin City, Wednesday.

The army spokesman at 4brigade Command, GRA, Benin City Captain Jonah Unuakhalu stated this yesterday while giving update on the unfortunate incident.

He stated further that the army has lunched full scale investigation into the incident.

Captain Unuakhalu explained that appropriate disciplinary measures would be meted on any officer found culpable in the public display of such unwarranted official rascality.

“As I told you before, we have started investigation and anyone found to have been involved in it would be disciplined accordingly.

“You know that they (rampaging soldiers) cannot be investigated if we don’t have they in our custody”. The Army spokesman maintained.

He did not comment on who foots the medical bills of those wounded in the disturbances or the status and whereabouts of the alleged traffic rules violators.

It would be recalled that Captain Jonah Unuakhalu had at the wake of the gangsterism, last Wednesday stated the Army is making internal arrangements to identify and discipline the officers.

The rampaging soldiers reportedly attacked WAI officials, stormed the premises of Edo State Magistrate court, Evbuoriaria, Sapele road where they foiled an attempt by WAI officials to arraign the alleged traffic offenders who were formerly removed from the court premises by the soldiers.

A woman said to have drove the car which was impounded by WAI officials made a phone call that attracted the soldiers.

Our reporter gathered that the couple in Mitsubishi car with registration number EDO, BEN 451 FH allegedly beat traffic light by Airport road forcing operatives of WAI to impound the vehicle.
Meanwhile, a Chief Magistrate who described the action of the soldiers as shameful said that a petition would be written to appreciate authorities.
