EKPOMA – The Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, The Most Rev’d Friday Imaekhai has implored Nigerians to be patient with
President Muhammadu Buhari as he settles to fulfill his electioneering promises. Imaekhai in his Independence message also called for trans-valuation of values, noting that as long as Nigerians harbour negative values’ their woes would persist. He therefore called on Nigerians to subordinate their selfish, ethnic and primordial sentiments for the common good of the nation. The Anglican Bishop admonished President Buhari to see himself as president of the entire nation and not a sectional or religious president, urging him to fulfill his electioneering promises to Nigerians.
“We call on Nigerians to support the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and be patient with him as we urge him to fulfill his campaign promises to Nigerians. “President Buhari should see himself as president of the whole nation and not a sectional or religious president”, he admonished.
He cautioned that despite the myriad of challenges confronting the nation, dismemberment of the country remains a ridiculous thinking, adding that it is an unthinkable idea after shedding innocent blood through the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War to keep Nigeria one.
The religious leader commiserated with the families of those that have lost their lives in the North through the activities of Boko Haram insurgency, and called on the governments at all levels, religious organizations and philanthropists to come to the aid of the
Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who have been dehumanized by the activities of insurgents.
He called for invocation of relevant sections of the law to prosecute those behind the gruesome act directly or indirectly, irrespective of their religion, ethnic, status or political inclination.
“As we celebrate the 55th anniversary of our independence, let us confess our private and collective sins, then ask for God’s pardon, pray and face our challenges squarely with fear and wisdom of God.
“The dehumanizing aspect of the Internally Displaced Persons should attract attention of government at all levels, religious organizations and philanthropists in the country. “Although objective reporting is key to mass media practice, it is expected that the overall interest of the country is paramount and this should guide reporting”, he said.
