BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has called on Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his fight against corruption.
He made the call while speaking at the nation’s 55th independence day celebration held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, in Benin City yesterday.
“Our President has rightly identified that we need to unite to fight corruption. He has encouraged us not to wallow in self-pity,” he said, even as, he reminded Nigerians that the task of building Nigeria is with Nigerians.
According to him, “I am happy that at this point in time Nigeria has elected a president that commands respect both in Nigeria and abroad.”
The Governor emphasized: “the unity of our country is not at the mercy of our detractors. Celebrating our independence today, I believe we are on the right path,” stressing that Nigeria conducted its general election and still remained united contrary to a prediction that Nigeria would not exist as a nation after the election.
While recalling the political history of Nigeria and the challenges encountered including military intervention and socio-economic hiccups, Governor Oshiomhole said there was every reason to celebrate the occasion, especially as there was no nation without its challenges and Nigeria has had her own fair share.
Noting Nigeria as a democratic country, he explained that the responsibility of Nigerians was not just to vote but also to interrogate the elected political officer holders to secure their commitment towards the realization of the vision of the founding fathers and sustain same, pointing out “I agree that together we must build our nation.”
At the ceremony, which was witnessed by top government functionaries from the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, the Governor inspected the parade mounted by a detachment of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police, Edo State Command and later took a salute during their march past which was also followed by that of the Nigeria Prisons Service, pupils and students of both public and private primary and secondary schools, voluntary organisations, Tippers drivers, members of Driver Welfare Scheme, Akugbe ventures, Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and Market Women Association.
