Many may examine this statement and wonder why the writer would make such as it is not a big deal neither is it news that one’s dog just gave birth, even if it was a twin or triplet as the case may be; but this was an excuse
However, this sentence is used euphemistically to portray the laxity and attitude of some people towards their jobs, businesses, and duties in their offices. It’s indeed surprising that in a country where the economy is tough and people find it extremely difficult to get a job, with many getting laid off quickly, some people still play with their jobs, displaying the ‘I don’t care attitude’ in their businesses and places of work, pretending to be highly connected.
My dog just gave birth was an excuse! After all excuses are no longer excusable. Several employees give flimsy excuses as a way of displaying laziness in their duties, after all, they are not the managers or employers, as many would say. However, this is a very wrong mentality as even the scriptures say in Proverbs 10:14 “he becometh poor he that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich” and Ecclesiastes 9:10 also admonishes “whatsoever their hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, for there is no work, no device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest”. Therefore, there is profit in being dedicated and diligent in one’s work.
Amit Kalantri once said, “Able hands are more favourable to business than adorable hearts”. Therefore, it is worthy to be diligent than being indolent.
Some lazy people always give numerous excuses for not giving in their best in their duties, and when expected, but dedicated people look for every opportunity to prove to people that they are up to the task. In lieu with this, Jared Kintz wrote, “it is what you do in your free time that will set you free-or enslave you”. Therefore, it is important you are known for hardwork and commitment to your work.
Some employees come to work anytime they feel like coming, and even when they get to the office, many feel relaxed and do not see the need to carry out their duties diligently for the benefit of themselves and the organization at large. Laziness only leads to poverty and penury, and if one is lazy, it won’t be long before his trademark will be made known to all, and will end up losing his job and respect from people.
Furthermore, if one displays laxity towards his job as an employee, there is every tendency that he will do same as an employer of labour. Therefore, it is very important to shun laziness and embrace hard work as it will be beneficial to oneself. In the same light, Miguel de Carvantes Saacedn once said, “diligence is the mother of good forture”. Hence, the importance of being diligent cannot be over emphasized.
Some lazy employees no doubt slow down the development of the organization or business as they are not always available when they are needed, and even when they are present, their presence are not always felt, while the dedicated ones are always noticed whenever they are not around because of their contributions to the day to day running of the organization. An organization that wants to experience massive growth and development cannot do so surrounded by indolent employees who feel unconcerned towards their duties most especially as it involves government organizations.
When people are being rewarded for their hardwork, dedication and resilience to their duties, the lazy ones remain at the background, not making any meaningful and notable progress in their lives, jobs, businesses and many more. Lazy employees will never take an extra shift or ask for more work. They take shortcuts to get the job done swiftly, and they are clock watchers, they are always looking at their wrist watches and cannot wait for the closing hour. Lazy employees can destroy customers’ loyalty and if one’s front line is filled with lazy employees who have no desire or intention of raising the bar of customers, one’s business may end up crumbling.
For private organizations, one is sure to have more dedicated employees and less lazy ones; however, the reverse is the case for public enterprises and establishments as here, one finds many mediocre employees who display indolence towards their duties. In government establishments, ‘ghost-workers’ syndrome is the order of the day with the trend of employees not coming to work. In some offices some do sign pretending that they are present while in some places some have turned themselves to be visitors better still, inspectors in their own places of work as they come once in a while and yet they receive their monthly salaries.
This is where I have problem with the direct payment by the government as there is no more proper monitoring and supervision of staff as regards to discipline, as the organization has no direct access to the person’s salary. One may be wondering how some officers have no moral justification to have been receiving their monthly salaries as they have turned themselves to ghost workers. Ghost is said to be a dead person, but to be a ghost worker it means ‘dead among the living’.
There is no justifiable excuse for anyone being lazy and not doing the job for which he is being paid. It is better to have a change of attitude and inculcate the habit of hardwork and diligence as we all try to embrace change and the fight against corruption in our lives. Menander once said, “He who labours diligently need never despair, for all things are accomplished by diligence and labour”.
Giving numerous excuses for not performing your best at your place of work is certainly not the right thing to do. The world’s notable personalities such as Bill Gates, a computer programmer and inventor who founded Microsoft; Ben Carson the first neurosurgeon to separate a conjoined twins; Oprah Winfrey, American talk show host, and several other personalities who grew to immeasurable heights in life as a result of their hardwork and diligence.
Let us all remember the words of Jarod Kintz, “the year you were born marks only your entry into the world. Other years where you prove your worth, they are the ones worth celebrating” .Therefore, at the end of one’s virtual existence on planet earth, what will you be remembered for? Laziness and Indolence or Hardwork, Diligence, and Dedication and more so, what are you known for in your working place as a good name they say is better than riches?
One can’t be the best in his field, work place and the likes if he continually exhibits laziness in all his doing. In lieu with this, Chuk Close wrote, “amateurs look for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work”. Successful people are those who against all odds, through time and tide achieve a feat, distinguish themselves among the crowd.
It is pertinent to note that laziness cannot get one to utmost heights in life, but hardword can. Samuel Johnson once said, “What we hope ever to do with ease, we must first learn to do with diligence”. Therefore, diligence is the key to being the very best in life. Quit being a mediocre in your job, shun laziness and imbibe the attitude of hardwork and dedication as with these one is sure to fulfilling his dreams, visions and aspirations in life and build a good name in your working place.
