Abortion is the termination of pregnancy, especially at its premature stage. It is the act of ending a pregnancy by using medicine or a surgical procedure. In general, it is the use of any means, even local herbs, alcohol and other hard drugs to terminate the pregnancy of a female, which often lead to a painful destruction of the fetus, that the baby in the womb at it early stage of development.
There are two methods of abortion: A medical abortion and a surgical abortion. Medical abortion is abortion with pills. It involves taking medicines to end a pregnancy. A surgical abortion or what some people refers to as suction abortion, is a procedure that uses medical instruments in the vagina and uterus to remove the pregnancy.
There are so many reasons why people consider abortion as the best option. Some women often consider abortion because their pregnancy might threaten their health or even their life. For instance, if the baby is growing outside the womb, in such cases, most doctors will quickly recommend abortion in order to save the life of the woman.
Abortion is considered when parents discover that the baby may have severe birth defects. Some even consider abortion because of the sex of the baby. If for instance, the parents are desperately looking for a male child, they may be tempted to abort their female children. So many innocent children have been destroyed in the process of selecting what they consider as the right sex. But who are we to determine the sex of our babies?
If, unfortunately, the lady becomes pregnant abortion is not the best option. Two wrongs can never make a right. There are so many orphanage homes that are willing to accept the responsibility of training such children at any level in life. Even in areas where there are no motherless babies home, we have so many married but barren couples who are looking for children to adopt.
Another obvious reason why people consider abortion is because of their job. Most pregnant women, even married women are rejected in most offices and job opportunity. A married woman’s job appointment was terminated because she was tested positive in her pregnancy test. She had no option than to abort the baby. After securing the job and it was time for her to have babes she could not become pregnant because her womb was destroyed during the abortion.
The number of students that go into abortion is unimaginable. Most of these students use their academic ambition to justify their option for abortion. Certainly most schools can hardly harbor a student that is pregnant. In order to continue with their academic pursuit, the students have no option than to consider abortion.
The government should come up with laws that protect the pregnant women at school and places of work; else people will continue to justify abortion. The child in the womb has a right to life like every other human being. However, prevention is indeed better cure. If you are a student and you know that you are not old enough to take up the parental responsibility the best solution to the problem of abortion is abstinence. Do not expose yourself to premarital sex. Avoid bad friends. In fact, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals. Come to your right mind, and sin no more” (I Corinthians 15:33-34).
Most parents often encourage their daughters to abort their babies because of their religious, social or even political statue. Premarital pregnancy is often seen as a sign of irresponsibility on the part of the parents. To avoid facing the shame of having a pregnant daughter outside wedlock, they will encourage their daughters to evacuate the child (their grandchild) through abortion.
Possible Effects and risks involved in Abortion:
Abortion leads to hemorrhage, that is heavy bleeding. Blood is the essence of life. Human blood is sacred and directly connected to God’s heart; whatever happens to human blood affects the natural order. For instance, when Cain murdered his brother, Abel, the Lord God said to him, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground” (Genesis 4:10). Anytime abortion is committed the blood of innocent children cries to God for revenge.
Pelvic pain: The pain most ladies go through after abortion is worst than labor pain. Labour pain stops immediately after delivery but the pain from abortion lingers after abortion. The most painful part of it is that the lady in question suffers in silently and privately. She cannot express herself publicly. In fact, she will do everything possible to keep the pain to herself. What a painful and ugly situation.
Post-abortion sickness: Abortion is associated with all kinds of ill-health. The most obvious ones are vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. Abortion can also cause an allergic reaction to medicines. It often leads to chronic stomach pains.
Abortion can easily cause barrenness: a good number of barren women we have in the world today are women who at one point in time committed abortion. It can easily lead to inability to conceive due to infection and other complications. The womb or the uterus can easily be destroyed in the process of performing abortion.
Incomplete removal of the unborn child and placenta can also lead to a major operation. If the womb is seriously affected during the process of abortion, this can lead to complete removal of the womb which is indeed the cause of most barrenness in the world today.
Abortion leads to death: It is a direct form of killing and destruction of human life. The baby is the first victim. Every form of abortion leads to the death of the innocent baby. Abortion can also lead to the death of the mother, especially when it is performed by amateur doctor.
The Christian bible condemns every form of killing. In the Old Testament Bible, the Lord God declares, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for God made man in his own image” (Genesis 9:6). When it comes to abortion God cannot imagine a mother destroying her own baby; and that is why he declares, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?” (Isaiah 49:15).
For God, it is unimaginable for any reason reasonable mother to flush out the child of her womb. Yet most people are committing abortion without any remorse. Some countries have gone as far as legalizing abortion and even assisting women to commit abortion in the name of freedom of choice.
Some people even claim that the fetus is not even a human being. But the Lord told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). God consecrates the fetus even while it is still in the womb. The fetus is indeed a complete human being!
In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ condemns killing and adultery. “You know the commandments: ‘Do not kill, do not commit adultery…” You may ask, what is the relationship between killing and adultery? Adultery leads to premarital pregnancy whereas premarital pregnancy leads to abortion and abortion as we know is a form of killing. Prevention is better than cure! To avoid killing of innocent children through abortion one should avoid premarital sex.
The Canon Law strong opposes all forms of abortion: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (Canon 2271). According to this canon, Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are there considered as abominable crimes.
In line with the Christian doctrine, the Muslim Quran is also strongly against abortion and all forms of killing: “You shall not kill any person – for GOD has made life sacred – except in the course of justice” (Surah 17:33). Life cannot be destroyed because it is sacred. Concerning abortion the quran declares, “And kill not your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely, the killing of them is a great sin” (Surah Isra 17:31). Abortion is indeed a grave sin both in Christianity and Islamic religion.
If you have even committed abortion you need to repent from your heart; go to confession for God’s mercy. Thank God, during this year of Mercy the Holy Father, Pope Francis granted all the Catholic Priests the faculty to absolve people from the sin abortion. As God forgives you remember the warning of our Lord Jesus Christ in John 8:11, “Go and sin no more!”
