Benin city – Edo State Government has reiterated its earlier ban on illegal parking, loading and off-loading of goods and passengers at designated and strategic areas, especially at Oba Ovoranmen Square, by members of the public, particularly commercial vehicle owners and drivers.
A government special statement issued yesterday by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), CP Augustine Evbakhavbokun (rtd) explained that the prohibition order is part of government’s reforms to restore sanity and ensure free flow of traffic within the Benin Metropolis.
Consequently, the statement re-emphasised its earlier ban on illegal parking, loading and off-loading of goods within Oba Ovoranmen Square, Oba Market, Mission Road to Ugbague Junction, New Benin Area, Ikpoba-Hill/Ramat Park, Ekiosa/Sakponba junction and other strategic areas in the city.
It also prohibited street trading especially on walk-ways as well as directed the mandatory use of designated parks within the city and the use of service lanes on both sides of express road, emphasizing that defaulters would have their vehicles impounded and penalized.
The government special statement also re-emphasised the prohibition of commercial drivers from driving any unpainted commercial vehicle within Edo State as all such commercial vehicle drivers are to adhere strictly to the government colours of yellow and fire-red.
