BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has disclosed that he has notified the State Head of Service, Mrs. Gladys Idahor to expedite action on the promotion of workers in the state.
He made the disclosure while receiving the newly elected executive of the Edo State Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Government House, Benin City on Friday.
The Governor said he had given the directive for the translation into its financial implication up to date pointing out, “we will sustain the promotion, fast-track the process and pay the workers.”
According to the Governor, “I try to do away with civil service of god-fatherism where promotion is usually not based on merit,” just as he emphasised promotion on seniority and spread.
He explained, “what we pay the worker is the only money in circulation in the country. His spending pattern is more patriotic than that of the big guy.”
Governor Oshiomhole, who explained why some Permanent Secretaries and directors were demoted, hinted on Local Government reforms and assured “we will work hard on ‘one man one vote.’
While commending the TUC for representing the true democracy and assured of his support, the Governor also promised to be at the Workers Day on May 1, 2016 which is the International Workers Day as well as provide a vehicle for the state TUC.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Edo State Trade Union Congress, Comrade Ohue Marshal, shortly after being introduced to the State Governor, by his predecessor, comrade Joe Aligbe, commended Governor Adams Oshiomhole on the infrastructural development of the state.
Comrade Ohue Marshal said “You have broken records and you have created new ones. You have done well in the area of payment of workers’ salaries. I want to say thank you.
While assuring Governor Oshiomhole that they would work with him, Comrade Marshal said, “On May Day, we want to use this day to celebrate you, to tell the whole world, you have done well.”
Comrade Marshal thereafter made some requests including a vehicle for the state TUC.
Meanwhile, Governor Oshiomhole also received the leadership and members of National Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Edo State Chapter led by Alh. Yusuf Bako during which he emphasised unity of Nigeria as a responsibility of government.
He explained that among his promises he made to himself was not just to build infrastructure but also to build bridges of unity across ethnic divides.
Governor Oshiomhole canvassed the study of both Christian and Islamic religious studies saying, “I believe it is worth doing. I believed it is in the interest of our people just as he assured them of the possibility of building a mosque in Government House, Benin City.
Earlier, the Chairman of National Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Edo State Chapter, Alh. Yusuf Bako explained that the council is the highest decision – making body on Islamic affairs in the state and appealed to the Governor to always deal with the council on matters that affect Muslims among other requests.
