SON Alerts On Purchase Of Phones

LAGOS- The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged Nigerians to patronised recognised centres for the purchase of their mobile phones.

The Head of Electrical Electronics of SON, Mr Richard Adewunmi, gave the advice in Lagos, during the official opening of Nokia Care centre in Ikeja.

“This is necessary because certified dealers would help to rectify any fault in the handset, when such arises,” he said.

He noted that substandard handset would definitely pack up within a few months of purchase and “there are high rates of health hazards associated with fake phones”.

“Nigerians should not be kobo wise and naira foolish. They should not just go to the market and pick anything. This is because by the time they buy the substandard phones, they will end up spending more for repairing them,” Adewunmi said.

He lauded Nokia for setting up a centre where people could have their Nokia handsets repaired with optimum care.

He said that SON had been campaigning against any handset manufacturer without a service centre in the country.

“Every country is fighting to reduce e-waste, that is why we are present at this unveiling of Nokia Care Centre to give our support,” he said.

The Manager of the Customer Care Service of Nokia Sub Saharan Africa, Mr. Rory Little, said that the new care Centre was to add value to the Nokia brands.

“We want our customers to not only buy genuine Nokia products, but also to enjoy the benefits of this by ensuring these products can be serviced, enhanced and upgraded professionally,’’ Little said.
He said that the company had embarked on a warranty strategy to save the customers of Nokia products from buying fake products.

“All Nokia mobile phones come with a 12-month warranty, this should encourage our consumers to believe in our products because we offer reliable after sales service,’’ he said.
