Police Smash Five-Man Bank Robbery Gang In Lagos

LAGOS – A Five-man armed robbery gang that specialized in robbing commercial banks in Lagos has been smashed by the Anti-Robbery team of the Zone 2 Police Headquarters, with various sophisticated assorted rifles and ammunition recovered from them.


The recovered deadly weapons, eight assorted rifles and 109 ammunitions were identified to include five AK47 rifles, one Fal military rifle, one GMP military rifle, one pump action rifle, 78 rounds of Ak47 live ammunitions (in chain), 20 rounds of Fal live ammunition, 11 Ak47 rifle empty magazine and one empty magazine of Fal rifle.


The suspects who are said to be based in Enugu, it was learnt were nabbed at their hide –out with their catche of arms by the operatives in an operation that lasted a week.


The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar while parading the suspects at the weekend at the Zone 2 Police Command headquarters, Onikan-Lagos, said they were apprehended following a confessional statement made by one of the suspects earlier arrested.


According to the police boss, the police while acting on a tip-off arrested the suspect who under interrogation confessed to have along others carried out several bank robberies in Lagos.


His confessional statement, Abubakar said led the policemen to their base at Obe town in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State where four others were apprehended including their armourer.


Abubakar, who asked that the names of the suspects should not be mentioned, explained that statements made by the suspects had indicated that more arrest could be made and weapons recovered, noting that it might jeopardize on-going police efforts in this regard.


The AIG while highlighting the achievement of the Zone disclosed that no fewer than 75 stolen vehicles have been recovered by the Ogun State Police command in less than a month.


Abubakar also highlighted the break through to include the snatching of a notorious trans- border syndicate which include Nigerians and some foreigners, which specialises in snatching of flashy cars and cross them over to Cotonuo for disposal.


He disclosed that the Zonal anti- robbery team while acting on a tip-off arrested the duo of Lateef Adeyemi and Ademola Jabar alleged to be members of the syndicate but base in neighbouring Benin Republic.
