Diabetes, an ailment with growing concern world-wide is probably an un-diagnosed disease and set to overtake infectious diseases as the most common cause of death in many parts of the developing world.
By 2025, the number of people with diabetes is expected to be more than double in Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, and South-East Asia, and rise by 20% in Europe, 50% in North America, 85% in South and Central America and 75% in the Western Pacific.
For developing countries, there will be a projected increase of a 170% of cases compared to 42% projected rise for developed countries.
The increased risk of the occurrence of strokes, myocardial infarctions, heart failure, and renal failure in the diabetic patient with hypertension is well documented.
The arrival of different brands of blood glucose monitoring meters in the market place as well as the raised awareness of diabetes in the country in recent years, has led to an increase in the daily measurement and monitoring of blood glucose level in diabetic patients.
However, ALc test measures a person’s average blood sugar levels over a three-month period by taking a sample of haemoglobin ALC molecules—a specific component of the red blood cells.
Some blood sugar (or glucose) naturally attaches itself to these ALC molecules as they move through the bloodstream. When this happens, the molecule is considered “glycated.”
The more sugar in a person’s blood, the higher the percentage of glycated ALC molecules he will have.
Once a cell has been glycated, it stays that way. And since each ALC molecule has a lifespan of about four months, your ALC sample will include cells that are a few days, a few weeks and a few months old. That’s how the test result covers a span of about three months.
