BENIN CITY- As the campaigns for the April general elections gather momentum, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole yesterday warned the electorate to shun financial inducements during the polls, just as a deputy chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. John Jesuobo and his supporters dumped the PDP for the Action Congress of Nigeria.
Edo State governor, who gave the warning while flagging-off the Edo South Senatorial campaigns in Benin City, yesterday, said Edo State votes are not for sale.
According to him, the 2011 election is an opportunity for the people to decide on whether to reward those who have revived the development of Edo State or those who have impoverished the state.
He urged the electorate to vote for all the candidates of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the elections, especially the candidate of Edo South Senatorial district, Senator Ehigie Uzamere for demonstrating quality representation.
The governor particularly noted his contributions to ensure that the nominated Edo State commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was successful at the National Assembly and reminded the people of the need to vote wisely and refuse to be induced with money.
“We must vote for a man of character because this is the moment of reckoning. Senator Uzamere is a man I am proud to identify with because he dared the godfather of Uromi, just like the others who left the PDP”, he noted.
While assuring the people that they should not be deceived, Comrade Oshiomhole said “ this is my election, because I cannot govern well without members of the House of Assembly and National Assembly. We cannot stop the good work we have started, therefore the election is about defending the present”.
Various speakers in their goodwill messages, including the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu said the Action Congress of Nigeria has commenced a revolution for better Nigeria which will be enhanced after the party’s victory in the elections.
“The election is between the good and the bad, between achievement and failure and the turnout today for the rally is a clear testimony of the acceptability of the party by the people,” he added.
Others who spoke at the rally include the Vice Chairman, South South, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu; Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Barrister Austin Odigie, State Chairman of the Party, Rt. Hon. Thomas Okosun, a National Leader of the Party, Chief Tom Ikimi; State Woman Leader, Mrs. Modino Emovon and the Youth Chairman, Comrade Osakpamwan Eriyo.
Earlier, the governor who was at the palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa to present the party candidates for the forthcoming general elections to the Benin Monarch for his royal blessing, said the candidates will help complement his on-going efforts in the state when elected.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria for Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Razaq Bello Osagie said he is happy that the people were allowed to express their wish in voting for the candidate of their choice.
“This unprecedented turn out is a demonstration of the goodwill which the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the Action Congress of Nigeria have gained because politics is about the development of the environment. With what I see today, my interest to serve my people is rekindled.
A former chairman of the PDP in Ikpoba Okha, Hon. Sam Arase and Col. Igbinidu (Rtd), former chairman of Nigeria Legion, also joined the Action Congress of Nigeria.
