By FRIDAY OBANOR

BENIN CITY ––Edo State House of Assembly has adopted the motion calling on the state government to develop layout and embark on an affordable housing programmes for its citizenry.

The motion which was sponsored by Hon. Fred Omoigberai (Owan East) and thirteen other honourable members also directed that local government council chairmen in the state should develop housing layout as well as build affordable houses in their local council areas.

Introducing the motion earlier, its Chief sponsor, Hon. Fred Omoigberai said the provision of affordable housing programme and layout could attract investors to councils and bring community leaders who live abroad back home.

Seconded by Hon. Anslem Agbabi (Akoko-Edo 1), the motion mover further stated that the absence of quality life through the provision of affordable housing programme could stem rural urban drift.

Lamenting the absence of affordable housing layout for housing units in local council areas of the state, the lawmaker stressed that the primary responsibility of government to provide social amenities including affordable shelter/housing for its citizens.

The motion was however unanimously adopted by the entire House when the Speaker, Rt. Hon Zakawanu Garuba put the question to vote.

Also yesterday, the House adopted the resolution calling on the state government and other relevant authorities to come to the aid of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma whose faculty of law block and that of environmental studies as well as the central library are threatened by gully erosion.

Brought under matters of urgent public importance by the member representing Etsako West II, Hon. Philip Shaibu, the House resolved that it was cheaper for the authorities concerned to arrest the gully erosion problem now that it affects only one faculty, than allowing it to spread to other faculties including the central library.

Contributing, Hon Emmanuel Okoduwa said the gully erosion has claimed one life and preventing it would automatically mean saving the lives of other innocent students there.

Hon. Okoduwa noted that the monthly allocation to the institute would not be enough for it to take care of the devastating erosion problem at the school.

Concluding the debate, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Garuba directed the ministry of higher education, environment and other relevant government authorities to move in immediately to remedy the situation.
