ABUJA- Former Senate President Ken Nnamani yesterday in Abuja called for total overhauling of the electoral system. which must start with INEC.
Speaking at the National Civil Society Validation Summit on Electoral Reforms, Nnamani said there was nothing wrong with the 1999 Constitution.
He said the problem had always been the failure to follow the rules.
“You can amend the constitution 10 times, but the problem will still be there, if people don’t follow the rules,” Nnamani said.
“The Electoral Reform Committee is a step in the right direction, if the government will respect its decisions,” the former Senate president said.
Nnamani said the country needed people, who could stand firm and follow the rules to head the electoral institutions.
He urged members of the civil society organisations not to be discouraged, saying the country would have been plunged into autocracy without such vibrant organisations.
“The electorate no longer have a say, because positions have become appointive, rather than elective,” he said.
