Water Scarcity Hits Ijebu-Ode

 

IJEBU-ODE(OGUN)- Acute water shortage has hit Ijebu-Ode, headquarters of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun.


Reports say that scores of residents, particularly women and children, now troop to the streets searching for water from houses that have bore holes.


Some owners of such houses, however, sell the commodity at varying prices.


In Molipa road area of the town for instance, a 10-litre bucket sells for between N10 and N20 depending on availability of electricity A 25-litre jerrycan goes for between N30 and N50. Mrs. Serifat Oladele, a resident, lamented the water crisis, noting that the Sallah celebration was only days away.


‘’ We have never had it so bad since I moved into this area over six years ago,’ ‘she added.
Another resident in Bonojo area of Ijebu-Ode, Mrs. Cecilia Ibikunle, expressed fears of a disaster if the situation persists till the Yuletide season.


In Igbeba area, Mr. Samson Amaechi, a businessman said the scarcity was bad in a large town like Ijebu-Ode, considering its centrality and influence among adjoining towns.


He appealed to the council to lay new pipes and create more water points to cater for residents.
Chairman of Ijebu-Ode council, Chief Mufutau Oseni told newsmen that the twin problems of flood and water shortage were being tackled.
