BENIN CITY - Edo State Gymnastic Association has resumed training of its gymnasts ahead of the zonal national championship to be hosted by the state in the indoor sports hall of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City between 8th and 19th of October, 2008.
The championship is for the six states of the south south which includes the host state (Edo) Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River State.
Speaking on the championship, the state Chief coach Chief Isaiah Obanor revealed to OBSERVERsports yesterday in Benin City that, the championship is part of the on-going schools Gymnastic Initiative in all the zones of the federation.
Also, he said that the championship, aside the discovery of talents and skills is to select those that will represent the various zones at the national and international championships.
“This whole exercise is a build up to the national championship which comes in Abuja in a later date. We also have the international championship coming up too.
“Against this background, all the zones have been stepping up preparations to ensure they discover some talents and skills at the end of the day who can do them proud, the country in particular.
“So far, I can assure everyone that preparation is in top gear to ensure Edo State host the championship successfully. Our gymnasts are all training very hard at the moment to ensure we come out tops,” he enthused.
It would be recalled that the Federal Capital Territory Abuja zone in August held similar games with huge success.
