Lagos - An Under-10 Gymnastics Championships for primary school pupils in the Southwest area of the country is to hold from today September 25 to 26 in Lagos.
The competition, organised under the aegis of the South-West Zone I of the National Sports Commission (NSC),will hold at the Lagos State Sports Council Complex, Rowe Park, Yaba.
The championship is sponsored by Adefemi Folusho, the Chairman, Lagos State Gymnastics Association (LSGA).
LSGA Secretary, Ifeoluwa Ogunlaja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the zone’s representatives to the October national championships in Abuja would be selected at the competition.
Ogunlaja said the championship was open to as many U-10 pupils from the six South-West states, to select three male and female gymnasts for the national championships.
She said that registration for the championship which was free, would begin on Thursday and that participants would be accommodated at Mahyon Barracks Hostel, Maroko, Lagos.
Gymnastic coach, John Oyewuwo, urged parents to encourage their wards to participate in the competition as it would stimulate their interest in the sports.
‘The best way to grow a sport is to introduce it to children at their formative years so that they can grow with it.
“The state association will also use this championship to assemble its junior team,’’ he said.
NAN reports that undisclosed cash prizes and other items will be won by outstanding boys and girls.
