ADO-EKITI- The Ekiti State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said a total of 30 road traffic accidents, leading to eight deaths were recorded in the state this year.
The State Sector Commander of the Commission, Mr. Abanus Nwachukwu, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti.
Nwachukwu observed that the record showed about 40 percent reduction to the total number of 54 accident cases recorded during the corresponding period last year.
He attributed the reduction to the vigorous awareness and enlightenment campaigns embarked upon by the command.
“Last year, the road traffic accidents recorded in Ekiti State was 54, but this year, so far we have recorded 30 cases with eight deaths.
“The reduction was due to the level of awareness and enlightenment created by the command for road users to know the consequences of carrying overload and the need to obey traffic rules.
“Besides, we taught motorists to be patient, because if we are all patient on the road, we can minimise the rate of accidents,” he said.
He noted that the Commission had de-emphasised arrest of motorists to regular enlightenment on the need for their safety.
“Regularly, the Command does embark on awareness walk in major cities in the State, during which motorists were made to realise the need to be safety conscious on the road, ”Nwachukwu stated.
The Sector Commander stressed the need for motorists to drive with caution always, especially during the Ember months and the yuletide period.
“Road users should tread with caution as we go about celebrating and traveling in the months ahead and most especially when the ember months are fraught with hazy weather and poor visibility,” he added.
Nwachukwu disclosed that the Commission was working in concert with both the members of the National Union of Road Transport
Workers (NURTW) and the Road Employers Transport Association of Nigeria RETAN) in the state.
