Ex-Council Boss, 2 Others To Refund N1.3m

CALABAR - Mr. Emmanuel Agbaragba, former Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council in Cross River , and two other council officials have been asked to refund N1.3 million to the council within 60 days.

The directive is sequel to the adoption of the report of the state Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee on the audited council’s accounts for 2005 which was presented today in Calabar.

The House warned that if the three persons failed to refund the money within 60 days, the recovery of the money would be effected through the Public Funds and Property Recovery Court.

Presenting the report, Mr. Omang Idiege, the committee’s Chairman, stressed that the council officials exhibited a high level financial recklessness during the period.

He noted that an audit verification exercise revealed the non-retirement of imprest or advances, non-remittance of the generated revenue, while there were no records of the purchases made during the period.

The other officials indicted in the report are Mr. Christopher Afi, the Personal Assistant to the LG Chairman, and David Apu, Assistant Store Officer of the council.

Meanwhile, the House, in a resolution, has called on INEC to use factors such as land mass, a terrain’s cultural affinity and other social development indices in the creation of more constituencies and electoral wards for the state.

The House made the resolution, following a motion by Chief Jacob Enyia (Boki 11) calling on INEC to consider population and other indices in the delimitation of electoral constituencies in the state.

The House, however, urged the members of the National Assembly from the state to sensitise INEC to the need to create more constituencies and wards in the state.
