ADO-EKITI - Rufus Ogunleye, a secondary school teacher in Igede-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N530,000.
Ogunleye allegedly stole the money belonging to Ekiti Baptist High School Cooperative Society Ltd. Igede-Ekiti, in February.
According to the prosecution Ogunleye, 48, and financial Secretary of the Society was alleged to have fraudulently withdrawn the money from the society’s bank accounts.
The offence is contrary to section 390(9) of the criminal code cap 30 Vol.II, laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 1978 as applicable in Ekiti State .
Testifying before the court, the President of the society, Mr. Egunjobi Adeyemo, said Ogunleye applied for N800, 000. loan from the society along with other three members but only N200,000 was approved for him.
Adeyemo said that on Feb. 12, a cheaque of N530, 000, was signed by the leadership
of the society and given to the accused person for collection from the Bank.
He said the accused collected the money and bolted away, while all efforts by the society to retrieve the money had been unsuccessful.
After Adeyemo’s evidence, Magistrate Johnson Apuabi adjourned the case till Oct. 17, for further hearing.
