Bayelsa To Recruit 700 Teachers

LAGOS - Bayelsa government says it will recruit 700 teachers next year to boost its workforce.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Josephine Ezonbodoe told newsmen in Lagos that the move was to give primary and post-primary education in the state a fillip.

She said priority would be given to science teachers in the recruitment.

“We will recruit about 700 teachers next year to beef up the teaching strength in our primary and secondary schools.

“Half of that number will be for science subjects because we want to inculcate science- based knowledge in our children early enough,” Ezonbodoe said.

The Commissioner disclosed that the government had so far rehabilitated 40 primary and secondary schools this year, adding that more schools would benefit in the 2009 budget.

Ezonbodoe said three model science colleges would be established in each of the three senatorial districts as part of efforts to promote sciences.

“Each school will be equipped with modern learning facilities that will accommodate at least 2,500 students.

“In addition, some of our junior secondary schools will be renovated with a view to upgrading them to senior secondary schools.

“We are equally looking beyond the difficult terrain in the state as the government is determined to create a vibrant educational system that will arrest criminality and militancy,” she added.
Created in 1996, Bayelsa currently has 500 primary schools, 149 junior secondary schools and 159 senior secondary schools.

It also boasts of a state university — Niger-Delta University and a Federal Polytechnic.
