ABUJA- Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, first Deputy Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, said in Abuja that child rights and drug trafficking would top the agenda at ongoing extra-ordinary session of the parliament.
“At the end, we will take decisions and send them back to the Council of Ministers for Consideration, Ekweremadu told newsmen in an interview at the opening ceremony of the extra-ordinary session.
Ekweremadu, who is also the Deputy President, Nigerian Senate, reiterated the commitment of the parliament to effectively tackle child abuse in West Africa .
Earlier, while declaring open the session, Hon. Mahamane Ousmane, Speaker of the parliament, said the session was convened to deal with issues affecting youths, gender and health.
Ousmane said the session would produce recommendations, which would be forwarded to the ECOWAS Commission, as sought by the leadership of the commission.
“The commission is seeking the advisory opinion of our parliament on four draft texts whose impact on the future of the sub-region cannot be over-emphasised, Ousmane said.
Reports say that the draft on child, youth and gender policies are among the reports to be considered and ratified by the parliament during the session.
