WARRI - Executive Director, Environment Right Action (ERA), Nimo Bassey yesterday berated multi national oil corporations in the country for their neglect and total disregard to international standard practices.
Bassey who was speaking against the backdrop of the recent occupation of Chevron office in Warri, Delta state by women from Bayelsa state who were protesting the oil spill that is presently threatening to wipe out the communities along the coast, said oil corporation were only interested in making profit to the detriment of the environment and the people who live there.
“These corporations only see profit, they see an environment they can rape, they can do whatever they like and go away with it and they do it with impunity because nobody is holding them accountable.”
He revealed that from the meeting held with the Environment Ministry and other agencies yesterday, it will take about a month for the fire in the oil rig to stop and this he said is having serious impact on the immediate environment and other neighboring communities along the coast and yet Chevron and Shell are not doing anything about it.
He also commended the courageous Bayelsa women who yesterday laid siege at the premises of Chevron in Delta state, saying that the women decided to take their fate in their own hands because the government and the agencies responsible to fight for them have disappointed them time without number.
According to him, “we have the oil spill and detection agency (NOSDRA) which will only concur with whatever the oil corporation say, and this is because they lack the equipment to independently verify whatever is going on. I believe if they are properly equipped, they will do a better job.”
