Auchi-Okene Highway: EDHA calls for quick repairs

By KEN ABU

BENIN CITY- Edo State House of Assembly has adopted a resolution directing the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing; Federal Ministry of Environment and FERMA to immediately commence repairs and maintenance work along the Jattu axis of the Auchi – Okene road with a view to averting imminent dangers on the erosion –prone road.

The resolution which was adopted on the floor of parliament yesterday during plenary session, was sequel to a call for a consequential motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House , Hon. Philip Shaibu, following his presentation of matter of urgent public importance.

According to Hon. Philip Shaibu, the matter of urgent public importance was predicated on the current state of the Auchi – Okene road particularly along the Jattu axis which has caved in owing to the gully created by erosion water threatening to divide the Auchi – Okene road which connects the South-South people principally to other parts of the country, especially the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

Hon. Philip Shaibu maintained that urgent attention was required from the Federal government and its related agencies at the erosion- prone road towards providing palliative measures to remedy the problem at hand, pending the end of the rainy season which will allow permanent solution to the Auchi- Okene road problem.

Corroborating the views of the majority leader on the present state of the Auchi- Okene road as it affects the Jattu axis, Hon. Momoh Sheik observed that the state of the road which has degenerated so badly owing to the influx of large volume of erosion water on that road was a source of major concern to people from that part of the state, adding that if immediate attention of government was not directed towards providing palliative measures, they could be separated from the rest of the state.

Hon. Shaibu moving a consequential motion which was seconded by Hon. Momoh Sheik, urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Federal Ministry of Environment to immediately commence the rehabilitation of Auchi – Okene road in order to forestall a situation whereby residents of the affected area are forced into abandoning their houses; that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) immediately commence the repair of the Auchi – Okene road by way of providing palliative measures that would address the problem during this rainy season and that lawmakers from Edo State at the National Assembly should move a similar motion that would reflect the aspirations of the Edo people towards fixing the road permanently.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uyi Igbe while commenting on the resolution, ordered the Clerk of the House to forward clean copies of the resolution to the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, FERMA, National Assembly lawmakers from Edo State, the state governor, state Ministry of Works and Housing and state Ministry of Environment for immediate action.
