LAGOS - The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has said that vessel congestion in Lagos channel is due to excessive Cargoes entering the country through Lagos ports.
It said that over 70 per cent of cargoes entering Nigeria come in through Lagos ports.
A statement issued by the company in Lagos today, said that its chief exectutive, Mallam Abdulsalam Mohammed made the disclosure while receiving members of the House Representatives Committee on Marine Transport.
He said that there had been an “unprecedented upsurge in container traffic, adding that most of our importers like to bring their cargoes through the Lagos ports?.
Mohammed said that the NPA was helpless as it could not compel importers to go to some other areas different from their locations.
“Besides, to do so will have its economic and legal implications, he added.
The managing director said that there were some technical hitches in the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports which had led to loss of some operating hours.
Mohammed said that this period of the year was usually the peak of import activities and promised that the current congestion being experienced by oil tankers in the Lagos channel would soon ease off.
