COMMISSIONER of Police in Bayelsa Hilary Opara has appealed to the people of Bayelsa to remain calm over the Supreme Court judgment that sacked Governor Timipre Sylva and five others.
Opara made the appeal in Yenagoa shortly after the judgment was pronounced by the Apex Court.
“I called the Chief Judge of the state and he said she was also waiting for directives from headquarters and I told her anytime you are clear with the directives let us know so that we can come and she promised to do so.”
Continuing his plea for peace and calm, Opara added: “Bayelsans should remain calm. The government is government of the people for the people by the people. After all, the government belongs to Bayelsans.
“If there is any change of leadership, a Bayelsan is still going to be there. You should remain calm and make sure you remain law abiding. That is very important and wait for more development.
“I have gone round parts of the town and it is very calm. People are going about their lawful businesses. There is no molestation anywhere.
At the time of filing this report, NAN reports that Opara and the state Director of the SSS were seen in a convoy going round Yenagoa and its environs to ensure that law and order were maintained.
Reacting to the ruling, the National Youth Leader of CAN, Mr. Ebikibina Miriki, said the Supreme Court ruling on tenure elongation vindicated the organisations earlier position on the matter.
“It is a watershed to the political development of the nation which needs more interpretation as well as a challenge to INEC with regards to election already conducted in Kogi.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the Community Party of Nigeria (CPN), Mr. Daniel Williams said “the ruling is a welcome development”.
“Bayelsans have been yearning for change all along and we have been freed from bondage by this development.”
Reports say that security at the Government House and the Isaac Boro Peace Park opposite it have been beefed up while the Onopa axis lane of the Mbiama/Yenagoa Road leading to the Government House have been condoned off by the police.
