OBIO/AKPOR (RIVERS) -The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, said that to achieve sustainable development in Nigeria, political office holders must shelve the culture of abandoned project.
Bankole made the remark at Rumuosi, in Obio/Akpor council area of Rivers State , during the inauguration of an Auto-Disable Syringe Manufacturing Plant.
The plant, which was embarked upon by the immediate past administration of Governor Peter Odili, was completed by the current administration, in partnership with the Pan African Health Foundation (PANF) of the U.S.
The speaker noted that the culture of abandoning projects initiated by previous administrations had not only led to wastages, but had also led to breeding of political enemies, which he noted weighed down on development.
He urged the political office holders to cultivate the culture of unity and love, noting that such act promote development.
Bankole commended River Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, for completing the plant.
He said that the various projects initiated by Amaechi within one year had justified the decision of the apex court in returning him as governor.
Bankole pledged that he would use his position as the speaker to look into cases of withheld funds due to the state by the federal government and ensure that the monies were released.
Earlier, Governor Amaechi said that the plant was completed at a cost of N600 million.
Counting the importance of the plant, the governor said apart from boosting the state economy, it would also help to reduce prevalence of diseases.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, said that over 300 persons would be employed at the plant.
Reports say that the Governor of Bayelsa, Timipre Sylva, Patrons of PANF, including Chief Phillip Asiodu, Gen. Roger Blunt, were among the dignitaries who witnessed the inauguration.
