Why prices of chicken, turkey soar

BENIN CITY ––There are indications that prices of Frozen Turkey and Chicken may escalate in Edo State during the Sallah celebration if the activities of some traders are not checked by the state government.

The NIGEIRAN OBSERVER learnt that some traders had formed themselves into a union known as Turkey and Chicken Seller Union and have been coercing others to join through a registration fee of N152,000.

Reports say the group which had its location at around New Lagos Road, Benin-City had moved to another location at 1st and 2nd East Circular Road.

It was gathered the group because of this connection had made business difficult for non-members.
Reports say due to the ban on the sale of these poultry products by the Federal Government, the group had cashed in on it, forcing other sellers of the product to toe their directive or be forced out of business.

The NIGERIAN OBSERVER also learnt that intending members are forced to take oath while arrangement are made with drivers not to convey goods for non-members.

However, some sellers of turkey and chicken in the state in their reactions, lamented the recent development and called on the state government to check the activities of the group.

Sellers who craved anonymity in a chat with newsmen called on relevant authorities, especially security agencies to investigate them and bring those involved to book.
