Osogbo - Ten men have appeared before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court charged with alleged attempt to kill two peasant farmers in Ejigbo area of Osun.
The suspects are; Azeez Olarenwaju, Abidemi Ojo, Sarafa Olanrewaju, Tiamiyu Oyegbile and Ajiboye Kehinde.
Others are Inamijo Kareem, Olayode Kehinde, Amodu Adewusi, Ilufoye Olayode and Thomas Adegboyega.
They were alleged to have conspired with others still at large, on Aug. 4, 2008, at about 10 a.m. at Igbon in Ejigbo to kill Adeyemi Oyedemi and Bolanle Yekini.
According to the charge sheet, the accused commit the offences of felony, murder and malicious damage.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Abiodun Fagboyinbo, said the accused persons in connivance with others still at large, were armed with dangerous weapons.
Fagboyinbo said the weapons included cutlasses and axes with which they attempted to kill Oyedemi and Yekini.
He also said the accused conducted themselves on the said date and time in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace.
They pleaded not guilty to all the charges and their counsel; Mr. Wale Afolabi, Taiwo Adedeji and Niyi Akinsola prayed the court to grant them bail.
The counsel said the offences alleged to have been committed were bailable under the Nigerian constitution.
According to the counsel, all the accused are respected members of the society who could not jump bail if granted.
But the police prosecutor objected to the bail application, saying that the case had to do with the lives of other people.
According to him, granting them bail may be a threat to the lives of the victims, as they may go back to execute their earlier plan.
The Magistrate, Mr. Ebenezer Akintayo, considered the submission of the prosecutor and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison till the day of next hearing. The magistrate adjourned hearing till October 9.
