LASG Seals Off 50 Shops Over Poor Sanitation

Lagos - The Lagos State Government has sealed off more than 50 shops on Kudirat Abiola Way , Oregun over poor sanitation.

Reports say that workers of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) — an anti indiscipline outfit of the government - closed the shops situated on both sides of the road.

Some affected shop owners told newsmen that the workers closed the shops because of failure to observe the weekly market sanitation fixed for every Thursday. One of shop owners, Mr. Yinka Olopade, claimed that the rains prevented them from constantly participating in the exercise. Another shop owner, who pleaded anonymity, accused the KAI workers of deriving pleasure in shutting shops for their financial gains.

“ Just two weeks ago, they raided this area and closed about 10 shops; we had to cough up N3000 each for the shops to be re-opened after three days,” he claimed. He also claimed that KAI did not issue any receipts for the N3000 fine.

The shop owner expressed the fear that the shops nights remain closed until the next Thursday because of the forthcoming public holidays. No official of the state Ministry of the Environment could be reached for comments as its workers closed before the official closing time.

The statement, “ Sealed by the Ministry of the Environment” was written on the door of each of the affected shops.
