Gas flaring: Nigeria loses 2.5 billion cubic metres daily

OWERRI - Senator Osita Izunaso, Chairman House Committee on Oil and Gas, has observed that the country is losing about 2.5 billion standard cubic metres of gas daily to flaring.

Izunaso told newsmen in Owerri yesterday that the country which was among the largest producers of Oil and Gas was still faced with the problem of flaring.

The senator, who represents Orlu Senatorial District in Imo State , said it was regrettable that what the country lost daily was equivalent to what a country like Trinidad and Tobago exported.

They are currently the fourth largest exporter of energy in the world as well as the first largest exporter of LNG in the world. Describing the situation as worrisome, he said that gas flaring had become a major challenge and could only be solved through legislation.
He reassured that the committee was equal to the task of ensuring that the issue was solved soon.

Izunaso added that the Senate had mandated the committee to design a frame work to appropriately resolve the issue.

The Senator said that the committees report was already awaiting a second reading by the House.

On the Freedom of Information Bill (FOI), he restated that the bill would be passed as soon as the Senate reconvened from recess.
