BENIN CITY – A group of Deltans from Delta North Senatorial District, resident in Ekpoma, Edo State, under the aegis of Delta North Forum, has rejected the proposed delineation by INEC, of state electoral constituencies in Delta State.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency meeting of the forum in Ekpoma, signed by the Chairman of the forum, Prof. O.P.G. Nmorsi, among others, made available to The NIGERIA OBSERVER.
While describing the upward review of the number of state constituencies in Delta State from the current 29 to 40, as progressive, the forum however condemned the criteria for the allocation of the additional constituencies among the Senatorial District in the state.
According to the communiqué, “Population remains the sole consideration for determining the size of state constituencies. The constitution does not recognise any other parameter, such as economic viability, as is being canvassed in some circles, or connection with those in INEC”.
The group noted that based on the 2006 Population Census, which put Delta State at 4,098,391; with Delta North having a population of 1,229,371; Delta Central 1,575,738, and Delta South 1,293,282; the distribution of the state constituencies under the proposed review, should be Delta Central, 15; Delta South 13, and Delta North 12; against the proposed review of 20, 9, and 11 respectively.
