Service conditions for journalists: NUJ meets October 13,15

By CLIFFORD AGBAJOR

ENUGU - The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will meet in Calabar between October 13 and October 15 to formulate conditions of service for journalists.

Mr. Ndagene Akwu, the National President of the union, said this at the weekend in Enugu, during the NUJ (Enugu State Council) award to Governor Sullivan Chime as the council’s “Man of the Year”.

Ndagene said that in spite of the role of journalists in enthroning and sustaining democracy in the country, media practitioners had been relegated and remained the least paid among other professionals.

“We help other professionals to fight for their own rights when they are aggrieved or go on strike, now it is our own time to fight for better pay and conditions of service for ourselves,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Governor of Enugu State, represented by Mr. Emey Chukwuka, commended NUJ for recognising the good works of Chime.
