ABUJA - As speculation mounts over an imminent cabinet reshuffle by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, stakeholders in the sports sector are baring minds on the fate of National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman, Barrister Abdulrahman Hassan Gimba.
In a no holds-barred chat with brilafm.net on telephone, former chairman of the commission, Chief Alex Akinyele labelled those calling for Gimba’s removal as enemies of Nigerian sports and challenged the Federal government to wield the big stick and fire the alleged detractors instead.
“It is not proper for anyone to suggest that Gimba should be removed when those who are running down Nigerian sports are still in charge.
“I know it’s those who want to have their way that are scheming to have him out. They want to have their way and are taking every means possible, but it must not be allowed to happen.
“We will only end up using him as a scapegoat, while those scheming against him will go scot free. That’s not the right thing for Nigerian sports.
“It’s those who are bringing sports down that should be flushed out, not this man who means well and has given his very best for sports since his appointment,” said the Ondo high chief.
The former information minister also commended Gimba for bringing stability to Nigerian sports and added that the NSC boss should get a vote of confidence to continue with the job.
