ABUJA-The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said it impounded contraband with Duty Paid Value (DPV) worth N27.2 billion between 2005 and last year.
Mr. Wale Adeniyi, the NCS spokesman made the disclosure in a telephone interview with newsmen in Abuja.
“DPV of the seized contraband for 2005 stood at N12.8 billion, that of 2006 was N7.6 billion, while that of 2007 was N6.7 billion.
“The number of seized contraband stood at 3,114 in 2005 and 2,913 in 2006, while 3,646 contraband were seized in 2007.
“148 persons were arrested for perpetrating the offences in 2005; 176 in 2006 and 173 last year,’’ he said.
He said that the items seized comprised textile materials, rice, used tyres, frozen poultry products, fridges and freezers as well as general merchandise.
On anti-smuggling efforts of the NCS, Adeniyi said that the service’s management had established three Federal Operations Units and Special Anti-Smuggling Units.
