BENIN CITY –– Edo State Government has mandated all contractors handling road projects in the state to return to site particularly as the dry season is gradually setting in.
This was disclosed by Hon. Anthony Iyalekhue, Commissioner for Works and Public Utilities who also oversees the Ministry of Information and Orientation, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the 10th state Executive Council meeting held in Benin City yesterday.
He said massive road building would resume again after it was put on hold due to the rains, especially as the yuletide is approaching.
According to the Hon. Iyalekhue, the council approved the setting up of a four-man committee to look into a construction firm, Lor and Hor, and all its failed and uncompleted projects in the state for which it had been paid fully. All the contracts were awarded by the past administration, including the Ofumwengbe-Okada dualisation road project, Teachers’ House and Third Cemetry road projects, pointing out that the Ofunmwengbe-Okada road was in good condition before it was destroyed and abandoned by Lor and Hor.
The commissioner said that Bendel Insurance had been fully enlisted in the national league.
Also, the Commissioner for Environment and Transport, Hon. (Mrs.) Sera Adetugboboh, said the staff strength of Edo Line had been successfully reduced by 147 staff employed between 2005 and 2007, and had been paid their entitlement.
She stressed that measures had been put in place to check drivers found wanting for which 10 of them had been caught.
She said within the next three weeks, new vehicles would be bought for the transport company.
