A Seven-man panel has been constituted by the management of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi – Edo State to examine the circumstances surrounding the armed robbery attack on the cash office of the institute on October 29, 2008 where several millions of naira was carted away.
According to a release issued by the Information and Public Relations department of the Polytechnic, the panel is also to critically examine the security situation on the campus and make appropriate recommendations.
In the meantime, all staff vehicles including motorbikes are to be registered with the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the institution and provided with stickers while a detailed arrangement on packing lots is being worked out.
Under the new security arrangement, the release adds, commercial motorbikes are henceforth to be restricted to the gates while staff are required to bear their identity cards at all times. Meanwhile, management of the Polytechnic has refuted insinuations that the detention of some members of staff by the police in connection with the robbery was instigated by it.
Describing it as unfortunate, management explained that the Polytechnic could not have suggested to the Police how best to handle a case of robbery adding that the interrogation of some members of staff was a normal process in that circumstance. It also used the medium to clarify that no increase in the fees payable by students of the Polytechnic has been effected for this academic session.
