Bizman Tasks Rivers On Rural Dev

PORT HARCOURT - A Port Harcourt-based businessman, Mr. Fred Neneh, has appealed to the Rivers Government to provide adequate infrastructure in the rural communities to reduce the rural-urban drift.

He told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the exodus of rural dwellers to the cities was as a result of the absence of modern amenities in the villages.

Neneh said the congestion in Port Harcourt was regrettable, stressing that if the rural communities had good roads, water and electricity, residents in the villages would not bother migrating to the city.

He said the security situation in Port Harcourt was worrisome, and urged the state government not to relent in its effort to fight crime and facilitate the socio-economic development of the area.

The businessman commended government’s plan to construct the trans-Kalabari and Port Harcourt ring roads, among other rural road projects, intended to make life easy for rural dwellers.

He said: “If government can achieve its target of providing adequate infrastructure for rural dwellers, then there will be rapid socio-economic development in the state.

“Government should transform the rural areas into semi urban places to compete with real urban centres, so that we won’t envy urban dwellers and rush to the cities.’’
