UYO - United Fishery Association of Nigeria (UFAN) says it has concluded arrangements to build a fish farm complex valued at more than N100 million in Uyo.
The President of UFAN in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Akwawo Akwawo, told newsmen in Uyo that the complex, when completed, was capable of absorbing 10,000 workers.
He said it was also expected to produce about 100 tonnes of assorted fish every year.
Akwawo said the Akwa Ibom Government had donated a large parcel of land at Itam in Uyo, for the project, which he claimed would be the first of its kind in the Niger Delta region.
He said a soil test confirming the suitability of the land for the complex, had already been conducted by the Department of Agriculture, university of Uyo. Akwawo said work on the project, to be financed by a consortium of banks and foreign investors, with input from the state government, would commence this year.
The UFAN president explained that the farm complex would accommodate production section, hatchery unit, water towers, feed production unit and a store for raw materials. He said the complex would also have an administrative building, water processing facility, security and power houses, among others.
Akwawo added that the Okobo Local Government Area of the state had also donated 5,000 hectares of land for a similar project in the area. He commended Gov. Godswill Akpabio for the interest of his administration in agriculture.
