BENIN CITY ––Despite the lifting of restriction order on human and vehicular movement in last month’s (August) Environmental Sanitation Exercise in Edo State, which took place at the weekend, due to the on-going Senior Secondary Examination being conducted by NECO, many residents of the state capital (Benin), observed the restriction order as human and vehicular movement were at the lowest ebb.
It was observed by our reporter who monitored the sanitation exercise in Benin City, that residents were involved in various activities aimed at keeping their surroundings clean.
Though many claimed not to be aware of the last-minute cancellation of the restriction order on movement, the sanitation exercise recorded appreciable success in Benin.
Speaking with newsmen, the Special Administrator, Edo State Environment and Waste Management Board, Mrs. Ejemen Inegbenoise, described the sanitation exercise as successful, noting that residents of the city had imbibed the culture that the last Saturday of every month is set aside for Environmental Sanitation exercise in the state.
At the Ikhueniro dump site, along the Benin by-pass, Uhunmwode Local Government Area, Edo State, Mrs. Inegbenoise, expressed dismay over the manner and way in which tipper drivers saddled with the responsibility of dumping refuse at the dump site, were now dumping refuse along the expressway indiscriminately.
She, however, assured at the weekend that the refuse would be cleared off the road within three days.
