ABUJA - Mr. Wole Olaniran, Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission, says many motorcyclists die during accidents in the country due to non usage of helmet.
Olaniran said most of the people died due to head injury “because once they are thrown off from the bike, the main point of contact with an object is their head.
“The people that manufactured motorcycles produced this safety helmet, to protect victims from severe injury during accidents.
‘’ We have realised that people that use helmet, when they are involved in accident, survive or sustain minor injuries.
“So all motorcyclists on motion must wear helmets with the passengers they carry,” he said.
Olaniran said the effect of accident on motorcycles might lead to permanent disability or even death, in most cases.
He said no motorcyclist was allowed to carry more than one passenger, as the law on overloading also applied to them.
“Any motorcyclist that carries more than one passenger is committing an offence against the law and will be charged accordingly .’’
He said that by January 1, 2009, FRSC would enforce the law on the use of helmet by motorcyclists.
“Right now, we are doing our best on advocacy by sensitising people on the importance of helmet.
“We are distributing handbills in public places, using radio and television jingles and also the print media, to inform them,” Olaniran said.
