ABUJA- The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it plans to encourage more universities to introduce the teaching and learning of Spanish in the country.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, disclosed this while receiving a delegation from Spain in Abuja.
The NUC weekly publication, “The Monday Bulletin”, released yesterday, quoted Okojie as citing the existing programmes in some universities as a pointer to the Commission’s interest in the subject.
“More Nigerian universities would be encouraged to teach the language in view of its importance in fostering understanding and cultural integration, especially in a globalised world,” he said.
Okojie expressed satisfaction with the excellent relationship between the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria and the NUC.
“This relationship has been concretised through a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in 2002.
“We need to review the MoU to expand the scope in order to address new areas for the mutual benefits of both parties,” he said.
Okojie said the Commission was working on a plan to appoint “focal persons” at its headquarters, to facilitate interaction with the Embassy.
