BENIN CITY- Edo State Government has given the assurance that it will look into the issue of multiple taxation being experienced by private medical practitioners and other small scale businesses in the state.
He observed that though taxation is good, multiple taxation could be counter productive and such multiple levies were burdensome, if not oppressive, which had now became a source of worry to market women and artisans among others.
The governor made the comments when the newly elected Edo State Officers’ Committee of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) paid him a courtesy visit in Benin City yesterday.
Prof. Osunbor gave the assurance of training of medical and dental surgeons as well as looking into employment of medical personnel.
He, however said he was being careful to avoid over-bloating of the state Civil Service.
Beside affirming that other issues raised by the NMA would be looked into, the governor who presented the key of a brand new Toyota Bus to the executive of NMA in the state in fulfillment of his earlier promise stressed that he liked fulfilling his promises
While thanking the members of the association for their support, he urged them to sustain it just as he commended the chairman of Edo State NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele who was the gubernatorial candidate of NCP, for his sportmanship in the political field and wished that others emulate him.
Earlier, the Chairman of Edo State NMA, Dr. Enabulele thanked the governor for his assistance to the association and commended his developmental effort in Edo State, including the total revamping of the health sector.
He said the body launched an attack against quacks and quackery and urged the state government to ban advertisement of alternative medicine in the electronic and print media.
Dr. Enabulele asked for training programme abroad and welfare package, provision on official car grants to private medical practitioners and support for NMA’s summit this year among others.
While asserting that NMA wanted to partner with the state government to ensure effective and efficient health care service to the people, he disclosed the Association’s support for the vision and mission of the Prof. Osunbor –led administration in the state.
