Osunbor assures c’ttee on Awolowo’s centenary

By THOMPSON ERHOMONSELE

BENIN CITY ––Edo State Governor, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor has declared his readiness to support any effort towards the centenary activities of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He made the declaration when the Awolowo Centenary Committee led by Otunba Mohammed Jobi-Fele, paid him a courtesy visit in Benin City yesterday.

Prof. Osunbor noted that Awo’s life was worthy of celebration so that generations unborn would grow up to know about him and his legacies, pointing out that many Nigerians benefited from the free-education policy and programme of the late nationalist.

The governor recalled that late Awolowo provided pipe-borne water for people in the defunct Midwestern region now Edo and Delta States, adding that his administration was determined to spread the provision of water supply to all part.

While describing Otunba Jobi-Fele as a foremost industrialist, Prof. Osunbor said the state was waiting for details of the centenary programme in order to know the state government’s participation.

Earlier, Otunba Mohammed Jobi-Fele hinted that the purpose of their visit was to intimate the governor of the centenary celebration of Obafemi Awolowo scheduled for March 2009.

He explained that the activities include an international conference, the launching of at least two books and luncheon for the contemporaries of the late nationalist whose legacies cut across the former western region, including Edo State.

Otunba Jobi-Fele solicited for both financial and moral support from all the states in the defunct Western region.
