THE Management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has pledged the assistance of a transformer to Bendel Newspapers Company Limited (BNCL) The publishers of the OBSERVER titles.
This pledge was given by Hon. Donald Igiede Omorodion, a Board member of the Commission, during a courtesy visit to the Management of BNCL, Benin City yesterday.
Hon. Omorodion said he was elated with the good efforts of the OBSERVER in spite of the difficulties it is going through, noting that as a media house, it need not share transformer with neighbours in the community.
The NDDC board member equally called for a symbiotic relationship with the OBSERVER through coverage of the Commission’s activities, noting that within a short while, some projects would be ready for commissioning and would require them mentioned in the newspaper.
He added that whatever the commission is doing, if not mentioned in the media, nobody gets to know about it. The NIGERIAN OBSERVER through state owned is at liberty to criticize the NDDC factually.
Hon. Omorodion expressed the hope that with the efforts of the media house and the hard working nature of the state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, the fortunes of The NIGERIAN OBSERVER would be improved upon before the end of his tenure.
Briefing on the action of the commission so far, he said the Edo State, NDDC has 225 projects it is handling. Out of this, 101 have been completed and commissioned, while 51 are ready for commissioning. 98 of the projects are still on-going while 5 were terminated.
Continuing, he briefed the BNCL Management about the works of the NDDC since its establishment by an act of the National Assembly in year 2000 as an intervention agency set up by the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering of the people of the Niger Delta Region, adding that it has a mandate of facilitating the rapid, even and sustainable development of Edo State.
Hon. Omorodion, however noted the stress period of the commission during the activities of youth restiveness (militants) which hampered the rapid development of the region, and commended government in the manner it resolved it which has brought about peace in the Niger Delta.
In his response, the General Manager of the BNCL, Mr. Monday Aigbe, commended the Commission for its people’s oriented projects and pledges The OBSERVER’s support to the success of the NDDC in the state.
He specially thanked the NDDC Board member for the donation of the transformer, noting that it would go a long way to solve the company’s electricity problems.
On the projects on ground in the state, he stated that the commission would need to re-double their efforts because leaving a very hardworking governor in Edo State would be a morale booster for them not to perform below expectation.
Mr. Aigbe enjoined the Commission not to hesitate in carrying The NIGERIAN OBSERVER along in its developmental projects across the state.
