DAMATURU - Harsh dusty weather has led to a boom in the demand for eyeglasses in Yobe, according to investigation by newsmen..
The investigation showed that the marketing of sun glasses was flourishing in the state, because of the high patronage.
Users of Sunshade glasses, who spoke with newsmen on Wednesday in Damaturu, said the use of the glasses became was necessary to protect their eyes from scorching sunlight and dust.
Mallam Ali Kolo, a resident of Damaturu, said he wore the glasses to protect his eyes from sunlight and dusty winds.
“You know we are blessed with a lot of sunlight and because of our proximity to the desert, what we get here are dusty winds,” he said.
A commercial motorcyclist, Malam Audu Haruna, noted that motorcyclists used sunshade glasses to protect their eyes from strong dusty winds.
“I buy at least three sunglasses every month because I always lose them and sometimes they get damaged.
“There is no commercial motorcyclist in Damaturu who does not use sunshade glasses. It is part of our working tools,” he said.
A teacher, Mr. James Barka, said he wore eyeglasses because he used commercial motorcycles to go to work and that with their excessive speeding, “I have to protect the eyes from the dusty winds”.
“I buy two eyeglasses every month because I do lose them to my children,” he said.
A seller of eye glasses in Damaturu, Malam Muhammad Baba, told newsmen that the patronage for the product went up sharply since the harmattan season set in, adding “the market has been very good”.
“You get the latest design of eye glasses here in Damaturu because we are always in the market coming with new designs and people buy them,” Baba said.
He said commercial motorcyclists and young men preferred dark glasses while elderly people go for plain ones, adding “ladies look for trendy designs”.
He appealed to the government to give loans to eye glass sellers to enable them to expand their business,
saying “one day, we will have a sun glass manufacturing company here that will employ people”.
