ASABA - There has been a 10 per cent reduction in the price of beans in some major towns in Delta.
According to a survey by newsmen in Asaba, the price of brown beans has dropped from N20,000 per 100kg bag to N18,000.
Some beans sellers, who spoke to newsmen, attributed the reduction in price to the availability of newly harvested beans in the market.
Mr. Abu Abbah, a beans seller in Asaba, said the production of the grain had increased and added that sellers had started receiving new beans.
Abbah explained that from now till July next year, the quantity of beans in the market would be high, as the supply of the commodity would be at its peak.
Meanwhile, a market survey by the Delta Ministry of Economic Planning, made available to newsmen, shows a slight reduction in the prices of some food items.
The price of ripe plantain fell from N250 per kilogramme last week in Asaba and Warri to N200 now, while 1kg of okro, which sold for N120 in Asaba and Agbor, now sells for N100.
The survey further shows that the prices of some foodstuffs remained stable in the last one week in some major towns in Delta.
For instance, a carton of tomatoes still sells for N2,800 in Asaba, while 1kg of frozen chicken still goes for N650.
A bag of Caprice, which cost N8,300 in Asaba, Warri, Sapele and Ughelli last week, has not changed.
The price stability covers other commodities such as gari, palm oil and beef which still sell for N220 per 1kg, N1,200 for four litres and N950 for 1kg respectively.
